The STI Clinic provides 4th generation HIV testing. The test seeks to detect both antigens and antibodies. The test can detect HIV antigens (p24) as early as 10 days after exposure but if you get a negative result and the sample was taken before 6 weeks after possible exposure, we will recommend a retest at the appropriate juncture. We recommend testing as early as possible so long as 10 days have elapsed. A negative result from 6 weeks onwards is considered conclusive on this test.

Providing a Sample

You will be supplied with an easy-to-use sample collection kit using a finger prick. A small amount of blood is collected from the finger prick in a specially designed chamber. You then send your sample back in the pre-paid envelope. Once your sample is received at the lab, it normally takes 4 hours to process your results.

All packing is very discreet and there is no mention of us or the contents on the outside. All packaging is marked Private & Confidential.

Results

Your results will be published to your patient profile, which can only be accessed by you. We do not send results by post unless you specifically request this service. If you have a reactive result (indicating that you may have HIV) you will be required to have a confirmation screen from a venous sample at a clinic near where you are located. We provide a list of clinics in the event of a reactive result.

Treatments

We cannot provide treatments for HIV but if you test positive you will be given advice on treatments when you have your follow-up test. Treatments for the management of HIV are highly effective and produce excellent patient outcomes if the treatment is commenced at the appropriate stage.
